Peeling Back the Layers: Rediscovering History and Embracing the Unknown
A Glimpse into the Past (Part One)
In the world of interior design, there's something inherently captivating about uncovering the past, literally peeling back the layers of history. Imagine walking into a grand entryway with walls adorned in old wallpaper dating back to 1880 or even earlier. As you gingerly peel away these time-worn layers, you embark on a journey through history, simultaneously unraveling the emotional layers of trying something new and slightly frightening.
Wallpaper, with its intricate designs and patterns, has been a quintessential part of interior decor for centuries. From the elaborate Victorian patterns of the 19th century to the bold and bright designs of the 1960s, wallpaper reflects the trends and tastes of its time. In this age of modern minimalism, uncovering a piece of history on your walls can be like stepping into a time machine.
This brings this blog to today - the many layers we found at our Bandy home.
Imagine finding a room in your home with layers upon layers of wallpaper, each one telling a story of the room's past inhabitants. The careful, deliberate process of peeling back these layers unveils the transformation of design trends and personal aesthetics. It's like piecing together a puzzle, each layer revealing a part of the room's history. From ornate damask patterns to psychedelic swirls, every sheet of wallpaper bears witness to the changing tastes of the people who once inhabited the space.
Take in the different patterns and imagine the thoughts and effort that went into each style. I'm not a big fan of the green leaf pattern, but it is the most recent. I found the beautiful red pattern below and thought maybe we could do a blue Damask pattern. And then I noticed something else…. a hand-painted stencil that dated back to the original plaster. This is probably from the late 1800s! What a beautiful find that brought me to tears.
