Sunrise at Old Bandy

Written by Clark Pound

Sunrise –

The early bird gets the worm, early to bed, early to rise, and many other sayings accompany being up early in the morning. One of the many things we’ve experienced since moving to the Bandy House is the most brilliant sunrises we have ever seen.

It is hard to describe just how incredible the colors are when the sun starts to peak out over the horizon to the East. I am colorblind. I have known this since I was about 14 years old. I found out when my father was painting the living room in the house I grew up in. While he was painting, I looked at the walls and said, “ Oh my gosh – look how dirty the walls were.” My father was painting the walls pure white. To me, the rest of the wall was quite different in color. He asked me what color I thought the walls were. I replied that the rest of the walls were a very dirty white. He then explained that they were, in fact, light blue. I was then tested for colorblindness and failed tremendously. I’m not as colorblind as a dog, but I'm close. I see some colors like red, yellow, and green (so I can drive), but I was told that what other people know, I see very differently.

Since we have moved down here and the crops have all been harvested, we can quite literally see for miles. That is WAY different from where we lived before. I actually enjoy being awake when the sun finally makes its triumphant return. I look forward to it every morning and am very sad when the clouds obscure it.

Note from Kat: Our cat, Tiki, also believes in early rising. We have a “secret passage” in the house - it’s really a door from our bedroom to the dining room - that we close when we go to bed. Sure enough, at about 330am, he is yowling to be let through the passage. It’s pretty funny if you don’t need to wake up to help him out. Then, around 5am, he has had enough, and Clark will get up to watch the sunrise. To think that he is 18.5 years old and he loves the sunrise.
