Preparing an 1880 Home for Snow: Lessons Learned

Winter came fast and hit hard, and let’s just say our 1880 home wasn’t entirely ready. Most of the windows got their plastic coverings in time, but we waited too long on a few - BIG mistake. Snow inside the house? Definitely a wake-up call. Time to find a window company too. The sunroom? We skipped putting plastic on the screens, which turned it into a snowbank. Rookie move.

We’re still tackling projects like wallpapering the room that saw more snow than it should have, but the challenges aren’t just indoors. The mile-long rock driveway has over a foot of snow too. A plow would destroy it, and the snow thrower would likely break on the rocks. It’s a no-win situations that has us scratching our heads. We are so not ready for country living winter!

As if that’s not enough, the ghosts in this old house seem to find our winter prep downright hilarious. If you listen closely, you can almost hear them laughing as we shovel, tape, scramble, and grumble a few unkind words. They also leave us gifts - like quarters and pennies to help with the cost.

Here is to surviving winter - one drafty window at a time!
